It all adds up
Taking a step back to see the bigger picture
This morning I was sitting with my first coffee, before my day really starts, reading this post from Candace Rose Rardon…
As you might have gathered from the title it’s a helpful reminder about the value of keeping going. That in the end it “all adds up”.
One of the challenges of a creative practice, for me at least, is keeping going even when I don’t think I am achieving what I’d hoped for, or life is distracting. I know that in the past when I’ve made the effort to gather together work and take a step back, I’m always much more pleased with myself and my work than I am when I’m head down focussed on whatever singular task I’m working on at that moment.
It’s one of the reasons I started The JOTT to encourage myself to maintain my personal practice, build a habit, enjoy the journey.
Each week, each singular visual note I create adds to the whole. In fact when I pull back I can already see it’s becoming a collection of sorts, and I can appreciate that the longer I can keep going, the more I can add to this collection, the more potential it has to evolve and become something interesting or even unexpected.
Your creative practice is more than a series of tasks and it is more than the sum of its parts. Don’t forget to take a step back every now and then and look at all that you’ve done. Gather up your projects, layout your pages and you’ll see that it all adds up to something quite wonderful.
